Did you know that usually, vitamin D is not vegan? Read on to find out why!

Nutrients that may be difficult to find in a vegan diet

As a vegan or even a vegetarian, you are cutting out certain foods from your diet. This means that you need to find other sources for the nutrients found in the foods you don’t eat.

vegetables containing nutrients and you need from this list of best vegan multivitamins

For example, you’re not eating meat. What important nutrients are found in meat?

  • Iron
  • Vitamin B12
  • Protein

Another example is that you’re not eating fish. What vital nutrients are found in fish?

  • Omega 3
  • Protein

Let’s look at some of these nutrients found in non-vegan foods – iron, vitamin B12, protein, and omega 3.

As far as iron goes, there are many plant-based foods that contain iron and if paired with foods rich in vitamin C, your body can absorb it better. In a different post, I outline 9 foods that are rich in iron.

Vitamin B12

I only recommend products I would use myself and all opinions expressed here are my own. This post contains affiliate links. If you use these links to buy something, I may earn a commission. Thanks.

Regarding vitamin B12, this is one of the only nutrients found in animal products that cannot be found in a vegan diet naturally.

Notice I wrote naturally.

This is because there are many vegan foods that are fortified with B12 to help vegans get this crucial vitamin. Examples include:

According to Healthline, as a vegan, if you don’t supplement with vitamin B12, you’re at a high risk of becoming deficient in this vitamin.

There are many vegan protein sources so this is a non-concern.

Did you know that all plants contain protein?

Yes, you read that correctly! All plants contain protein.

This doesn’t mean that if you eat a tomato, you’ll get enough protein for the day. However, you will get some protein out of it.

Where do you think animals get their protein from, herbivores, that is?

They get it from plants! So why are people so skeptical about where we, vegans, get our protein from?

People have a major misconception that vegans are lacking all the major nutrients. This is only partially true. If you ensure your diet is rich in the vital nutrients you need, you’ll do just fine and a multivitamin on the side will keep you balanced.

However, if you eat junk food all day, whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or neither, you won’t be getting most of your necessary nutrients.

It’s all about balance.

Omega 3

Omega 3 is only found in the sea, meaning fish and seaweed. Therefore, you don’t need to eat fish to get omega 3.

Here’s a little push to go to your local Japanese restaurant and fill up on sushi and wakame salad. Oh, I love a good sushi roll!

You can see that many of the nutrients found in animals can be found also in a plant-based diet. However, it requires more planning and ensuring you’re eating the right foods.

Therefore, many vegans supplement with a multivitamin to ensure they get everything they need. This is a great choice since you can’t always be so conscious of what you eat and calculate that you get all your nutrients.

Let the multivitamin be there to supplement, not replace what you eat.

I know many vegans who start out and complain that they’re so tired all the time, they’re weak, dizzy, etc. These are all symptoms of deficiency in vitamins.

Transitioning to a vegan diet can be difficult if you don’t do it right, so be sure to read the article I linked here to get some ideas.

Let’s talk about 11 of the best vegan multivitamins in the market!

Best vegan multivitamins

There are two kinds of multivitamins. You can choose to take it in a pill form or as a gummy.

Personally, I like gummies better since I had a bad experience taking multivitamin pills while I was pregnant. Since then, I’ve just continued with gummies.

And they taste like candy so why not?

  1. Deva multivitamins – These pills are actually advertised as “tiny tablets” and they really are! I used to take these multivitamins before I got pregnant and my husband still takes them. They’re perfect for those that have a hard time with big pills, like me.

  3. Pure & Essential vegan multivitamins – These multivitamins have a timed-release mechanism which makes it last the whole day.

Multivitam gummies/liquid

  1. Mary Ruth’s liquid multivitamin – This is in a liquid form so it’s perfect for those that don’t like pills. It has a raspberry flavor, which makes it sound so tempting!

Vegan multivitamin comparison

Wow, that was a long list of the best vegan multivitamins and gummies. Let’s take a look at what kind of vitamins they each contain so we can compare them better.

I won’t go into every single vitamin and mineral since the list will be endless. However, I will focus on 6 of the most important ones for vegans.

  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D
  • Calcium
  • Iodine
  • Zinc
  • Iron

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned that vitamin D is usually not vegan. It actually is made from sheep wool.

However, vitamin D can also come from plants. Therefore, it’s important to buy vegan multivitamins, not just any multivitamin.

Take a look at the chart below. You’ll find the percentage daily value for these 6 nutrients found in the 11 best vegan multivitamins that I listed above.

My recommendations

From all these 11 best vegan multivitamins, I will give my recommendation for a pill form, as well as gummies.

I prefer gummies but I know others prefer pills so you’ll get both. And the winner for multivitamin pills is…

Vegan Vitality

Why did I choose that?

Well, you can see in the table above that all 6 of the vital nutrients for vegans are found in these multivitamins.

Not only that, you’ll get at least 100% of the daily value from almost all of them.

Another plus?

These multivitamins will last you for 6 months, what a steal!

Now let’s see what my recommendation is for multivitamin gummies. Well, we already did the drumroll so here it goes…

What’s so special about these gummies?

As you can see, none of the gummies include all 6 of the important nutrients. However, Nutramin has most of them in the highest percentage per daily value.

Also, for those who don’t want gummies with sugar, these are perfect since they have a great flavor but without the sugar!

To wrap up

Now that you know which are the best vegan multivitamins, I hope this helps you choose one to keep you healthy.
